Can you name and show me this bird:

I have seen several small (3 to 6 birds) flocks of a shorebird I can't identify from Peterson's bird books. They are roughly the size of a whimbrel or curlew; long legs, long slender decurved bill, BLACK with a dark greenish irridescence on the back. On the web, pictures of the ibis shows a more massive bill.

A marsh hawk dove on a small flock, and they hopped up three to four feet with a slow wing beat, confusing the hawk. In flight they are direct like waterfowl, but slower, about 30 feet up. I have hunted ducks on the lake since 1970 and don't recall seeing them in the Fall. I have gone up Recreation creek in July and August for the past 10 years, and have never noticed these birds before.

Also, there are more snowy egrets (great egrets?) this year than ever before.

They are very likely White-faced Ibis. That is really the only bird that matches your description. If you have a photo, it would be of great help.
